Nerd squeal confession time: Yesterday I bought a book for researching an upcoming series I'm outlining. I read a sample on Kindle yesterday, and since it's a university press (UT), the Kindle price is SCANDALOUS! And not in a juicy interesting way.

Naturally, I looked for the hardback/ paperback version, and with shipping and tax it was a third of the price. This book will give me some great inspiration for at least two characters in the series.

I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED about getting this little gem in. Archival research! Callback to my Master's Thesis! Texas woman celebrating Texas women!

I'm going to miss bluebonnet planting this year

Cool things that authors get to do- create your own bookstore

Worldbuilding is one of the most time consuming but fun things that I get to do when creating books. Before I switched to contemporary fiction, I wrote historical fiction and a lot of the settings were already sketched out for me.

These days, I'm just going buck wild coming up with settings to give Madison flavor. As a writer, of course, I have to have a bookstore in town. I've had lots of places to draw inspiration from. Having lived in Austin for four years, I have a great example of how Texas does independent bookstores.

I also went to The University of Mississippi, and for my English classes, we got our "textbooks" at Square Books. It's an understatement to say that I've got some experience wandering the aisles.

So when I got the opportunity to create my own independent bookstore in Madison, TX, I jumped at the chance. For the Saving Madison series, each book is less than 20,000 words less, so I had to pretty much stick with the community center as the main setting.

For the Preserving Madison series, however, the books got longer, and I was able to expand my world. If you're reading this during the summer of 2025, Dillo Libros is "Coming Soon." By Spring 2025, however, you'll have a chance to stop by. Spend some time talking to the staff, buy a book, and head over to the cafe for a coffee.

Texas Twang Verses Drawl

I don't think that I realized how contentious the words "drawl" and "twang" were when it came to Texas accents until I started writing about them. In my experience, "drawl" referred to Southern accents as a whole, while Texas got its own category as a "Texas Twang."

After George Strait released his album, Twang, I felt justified with the alteration of using "Texas twang." After all, if it's good enough for King George, it's good enough for me.

I'll probably address this in an author's note somewhere, because I'm sure to get emails advising me that I am, in fact, "wrong" for using "twang" instead of "drawl." Still, I'm sticking with my choice. It's a Texas twang, or it will be in Madison.

African Americans, Texas history and trying to do the right thing

This is somewhat related to my series set in Madison, TX. One of the things I wanted to focus on in my contemporary romances was the complicated history Texas has with its history. This morning, I noticed this on my newsletter feed.

Save as much as you can. Pull up everybody. We need all of us to succeed in order to succeed. Try to rectify the wrongs you've done in the past the best you can. Admit when you were wrong and try to do better.
