In my Restoring Madison series, the long suffering people of Verde County encounter obstacle after obstacle as they work to restore their own courthouse.  Personally, I didn't go with arson as a challenge, but there are any number of factors that can delay or complicate a renovation.

I was determined to put in as many historic and environmental wrinkles in my series.  I also wanted to take my home state to task for being too selective in celebrating its history.  Most real life courthouse renovations will face cost overruns and political controversies, but I wanted to demonstrate how "doing the right thing" can reveal existing divisons in a community.  The process can also create more divisions than it heals.
